Political efficacy A person’s belief that they understand and can impact politics
Voter registration The requirement that a person otherwise eligible to vote must register (or enroll) on an electoral roll, which is usually a prerequisite for being entitled or permitted to vote.
Voter turnout The number of voters who actually cast votes as a percentage of the voting-age population.
Linkage institutions Channels that allow individuals to communicate their preferences to policymakers : Political parties, Interest groups, Elections, Media
Political party Organization that seeks political power by electing members to office: Primary purpose: Gain power
Dealignment Decline in party identification & loyalty
Realignment Dramatic, long-lasting shifts in party affiliation. Many people change parties
Political action committee (PAC) a group that pools campaign contributions from members and donates them to campaigns for or against candidates, ballot initiatives, or legislation. PACs are regulated
Free rider problem People who benefit from a group’s efforts without joining (and paying dues)
Interest group Organization that attempts to influence policy, some for a specific purpose or a more general purpose
Iron triangle mutually beneficial relationship between congressional committees, government agencies, and special interest groups in U.S. politics, or to the interconnected constraints of scope, time, and cost in project management
Lobbying the practice of trying to influence legislation, regulations, or other government decisions on behalf of a group or organization
