Ethanol Metab. (alc)

QuestionAnswer
What does it mean when ethanol is ampipathic? it's soluble in both water and solvents (hydrophilic and hydrophobic)
What does alcohol/ethanol do to our system? depresses neurons and decreases protein function (binding to a protein changes the structure, which depresses the nervous system)
Where is ethanol oxidized and what does it turn into? in liver to acetaldehyde (toxic) and then oxidized further to acetic acid and uses NAD+
How is methanol metabolized? into formeldehyde (toxic) and then to formate
What does formate do to complex 4 of ETC? Inhibits it (causing a hangover)
What technically causes a hangover? increased alcohol consumption alters the normal NAD+/NADH ratio, increasing the NADH
