Chemical Reactions

Chemical Properties, Changes, and Reactions

TermDefinition
Physical Property a characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance
Chemical Property a property of matter that describes a substance's ability to participate in chemical reactions
Chemical Reaction the process by which one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances
Solubility A measure of how much solute can dissolve in a given solvent at a given temperature
Mass the amount of matter in an object
Volume The amount of space an object takes up
Density Mass per unit volume
Flammability the ability of a substance to burn
Conductivity The ability of an object to transfer heat or electricity to another object
Reactivity The ease and speed with which an element combines, or reacts, with other elements and compounds
Physical Change A change in a substance that does not involve a change in the identity of the substance
Chemical Change A change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties
Law of Conservation of Mass Matter is not created nor destroyed in any chemical or physical change
Precipitate a solid that forms and settles out of a liquid mixture
Tarnish a change in chemical composition when exposed to air
Rust the formation of reddish-brown ferric oxides on iron by low-temperature oxidation in the presence of water
Signs of a Chemical Change change in color, a change in odor, the formation of bubbles/gas, the formation of a precipitate or a change in energy (heat absorbed or released, light or sound released)
Chemical Equation uses element symbols and chemical formulas to show a reaction
Subscript represent the number of atoms of that element in the chemical compound
Coefficient represent the number of that chemical element or compound in the reaction
Reactants the chemicals used to start a chemical reaction
Products what is made in that chemical reaction
Exothermic Reaction occur when the chemical reaction absorbs thermal energy from the environment
Endothermic Reaction occur when the chemical reaction gives off thermal energy to the environment

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
