4.2.1 Digestion

| Oral cavity | the inside of the mouth. |
| Pharynx | the throat, a passageway for food and air. |
| Epiglottis | a small flap that covers the windpipe when you swallow. |
| Esophagus | the tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach. |
| Stomach | an organ that stores food and helps digest it. |
| Small Intestine | a long tube where most digestion and nutrient absorption happens. |
| Duodenum | the first part of the small intestine where food mixes with digestive juices. |
| Jejunum | the middle part of the small intestine where most nutrients are absorbed. |
| Ileum | the last part of the small intestine that absorbs nutrients and passes food to the large intestine. |
| Cecum | the first part of the large intestine that connects to the small intestine. |
| Large Intestine | the part of the digestive system that absorbs water and forms waste (feces). |
| Ascending Colon | the part of the large intestine that carries waste upward from the cecum. |
| Transverse Colon | the part of the large intestine that carries waste across the abdomen. |
| Descending Colon | the part of the large intestine that carries waste downward toward the rectum. |
| Sigmoid Colon | the S-shaped part of the large intestine that leads to the rectum. |
| Rectum | the final part of the large intestine that stores waste before it leaves the body. |
| Anus | the opening at the end of the digestive tract where waste leaves the body. |
| Salivary Glands | glands in the mouth that produce saliva to help chew and digest food. |
| Teeth | hard structures in the mouth that cut and grind food. |
| Tongue | a muscular organ in the mouth that helps taste, chew, and swallow food. |
| Uvula | the small, hanging tissue at the back of the throat. |
| Liver | a large organ that processes nutrients, produces bile, and detoxifies the blood. |
| Pancreas | an organ that produces digestive enzymes and hormones like insulin. |
| Appendix | a small, tube-shaped organ attached to the large intestine with no essential digestive function. |
| Upper esophageal | a muscle at the top of the esophagus that opens to let food enter from the throat. |
| Lower esophageal (Cardiac) | Lower esophageal (cardiac) sphincter: a muscle at the bottom of the esophagus that prevents stomach acid from flowing back up. |
| Pyloric | a muscle at the end of the stomach that controls food moving into the small intestine. |
