Physical and Chemical Changes

| physical change | a change that affects the appearance of a substance, but does NOT make a new substance |
| examples of physical changes | cutting paper, melting ice |
| evidence of physical changes | shape change, size change, state change |
| chemical change | a change where a substance forms something new with different properties |
| examples of chemical changes | burning wood, rusting metal |
| evidence of chemical changes | change in color, temperature, light or sound; odor change; production of gas (bubbles); formation of precipitate (solid) |
