Muscular System

QuestionAnswer
What are the main functions of the muscular system? Maintain posture, produce heat, produce movement, regulate organ volume, stabilize joints
4 characteristics of muscle tissue. Extensibility, excitability, elasticity, contractility
Origin Spot where a muscle attaches to an immovable bone
Insertion Spot where a muscle usually attaches to a movable bone
Tendon Strong fibers that connect muscle to bone
What are the three types of muscle Smooth, Cardiac, and Skeletal
Smooth Nonstriated, 1 nucleus per muscle cell, and involuntary. Usually found on organs and blood vessels. Steady contractions.
Cardiac Striated, 1 central nucleus per muscle cell, and involuntary. Only found on the heart and has slow and steady contractions.
Skeletal Striated, multi-nucleated, voluntary. Found on the surface of bones and is not rhythmic.
Roles of muscles Agonist, Antagonist, Synergist, Fixator
Agonist Prime mover of muscle
Antagonist Does the opposite of the agonist
Synergist Assists the agonist, provides additional force
Fixator Stabilizes the point or body position
Myofibril Any of elongated contractile threads found on the surface of striated muscle cells
Myofilament Thread-like structure found on the inside of muscle cells. (muscle fiber)
Sacromere segment that allows the muscle to contract consisting of actin, myosin.
