TermDefinition
Osteoporosis A disease where bones become weak and brittle due to loss of bone mass.
Arthritis Inflammation or degeneration of one or more joints, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness
Tendon Fibrous connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone or other structures, transmitting force for movement.
Ligament Fibrous connective tissue that connects bone to bone, maintaining stability of joints
Femur The longest, strongest bone in the body (thigh bone), connects hip to knee, contains red and yellow marrow
Neuron Nerve cell that transmits electrical impulses; essential components include axon, dendrites, terminals
Synapse Junction between neurons (or neuron and effector) where signals pass via neurotransmitters across a small gap.
Meninges Three protective layers (dura mater, arachnoid mater, pia mater) enveloping the brain and spinal cord
Cerebellum Brain region located below and behind the cerebrum; coordinates balance, posture, and voluntary motion.
Ganglion Cluster of nerve cell bodies in the peripheral nervous system, acting as relay or processing centers
Retina Light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eyeball; converts light into electrical signals sent via optic nerve
Cochlea Spiral, fluid-filled inner ear structure containing the organ of Corti that converts sound waves into nerve impulses.
Olfactory bulb Brain structure above the nasal cavity that receives and processes smell information from the nose
Papillae Small projections on the tongue containing taste buds; aid in gustation through taste receptors
Cornea Clear, dome-shaped front surface of the eye; refracts light and provides a protective barrier.
