Anatomy of the skin

Basic understanding

Epidermis - what is it? contains... - outer coating of the skin - no blood vessels or nerve endings - has hairs, sweat and glands that provide a natural barrier
Dermis - what is it? made up of... function - thick layer of blood and lymph vessels - fibrous tissue which gives the skin its toughness - provides nutritional support to the epidermis
Subcutaneous layer - contains deep fat cells and provides heat regulation for the body. It supports the structures of the outer layer of skin
Skin - Largest organ of body - Maintaining skin integrity essential to prevention of infection and the promotion of both physical and psychological health - Regulation of temp - Physical and immunological protection
