Digestive System

TermDefinition
Gastrointestinal Tract (GI) long tube in the body where food is digested, nutrients are absorbed, and waste is removed
Oral Cavity (Upper GI) the mouth, where food enters and chewing begins
Pharynx (Upper GI) the throat, passageway for food and air
Epiglottis (Upper GI) small flap that closes over the airway so food doesn’t enter the lungs
Esophagus (Upper GI) muscular tube that moves food from the throat to the stomach
Stomach (Upper GI) muscular organ that churns food and mixes it with digestive acids
Small Intestine (Upper GI) long coiled tube where most digestion and nutrient absorption occur
Duodenum (Upper GI) first section, receives bile and pancreatic enzymes
Jejunum (Upper GI) middle section, major site of nutrient absorption
Ileum (Upper GI) final section, absorbs remaining nutrients especially B12 and bile salts
Trachea (Upper GI) windpipe, a tube that carries air from the throat to the lungs
Cecum (Lower GI) pouch that connects the small intestine to the large intestine
Large Intestine (Lower GI) absorbs water and forms stool
Ascending Colon (Lower GI) moves stool upward on the right side
Transverse Colon (Lower GI) moves stool across the abdomen
Descending Colon (Lower GI) moves stool downward on the left side
Sigmoid Colon (Lower GI) s-shaped segment leading to the rectum
Rectum (Lower GI) stores stool before elimination
Anus (Lower GI) opening through which stool exits the body
Salivary Glands (Accessory Organs) produce saliva to start digestion and help swallowing
Teeth (Accessory Organs) break down food mechanically
Tongue (Accessory Organs) helps with chewing, swallowing, and taste
Uvula (Accessory Organs) soft tissue that helps with swallowing and speech
Liver (Accessory Organs) produces bile to digest fats and performs metabolic functions
Pancreas (Accessory Organs) produces digestive enzymes and regulates blood sugar
Appendix (Accessory Organs) small pouch attached to the cecum; may support gut immunity
Sphincters circular muscles that open and close passages in the GI tract
Upper Esophageal controls entry of food from the throat into the esophagus
Lower esophageal (Cardiac) prevents stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus
Pyloric controls the release of stomach contents into the small intestine
