|---|---|
| Scientific investigation | A systematic way to learn about the natural world and solve problems that may include making observations, asking questions, gathering information, analyzing data, summarizing results, defending conclusions, and/or communicating results. |
| define a problem | Answered or solved using a science process. |
| research | Use reliable sources of information and or prior investigations to build understanding. |
| make predictions | based on research and prior knowledge |
| Plan and carry out investigations | creating and following steps to collect data (may or may not involve controlled variables) |
| Collecting data | Can be observations and/or measurements |
| interpret data | using charts, tables, and graphics |
| analyze information | Identifying trends and patterns within the data |
| Defending conclusions | An explanation that tells what the investigations showed, based on observations and data |
| Observation | Gathering information using your senses. and/or scientific instrument |
| Data | Measurements or observations collected or recorded in an investigation or experiment. |
| record keeping | Scientists record observations, measurements, notes, pictures, drawings, diagrams and data in a science notebook. |
| Inference | Explanation based on evidence that is NOT directly observed. |
| Opinion | A belief that cannot be verified through measurements and data. |
| Experiment | Experiments are a specific type of investigation that has controlled variables and/or a control group. |
| Investigation | Investigations do not always follow a rigid "science method" but do not involve the use of observations and evidence. |
| Variable | An event, condition, or factor that can be changed or controlled in order to study or test a hypothesis. |
| Variable you test (change on purpose) | ONE part of the experiment that is changed on purpose to test the effects. |
| Variable you measure | The ONE type of data collected as a result of the tested variables |
