Science Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Scientific investigation A systematic way to learn about the natural world and solve problems that may include making observations, asking questions, gathering information, analyzing data, summarizing results, defending conclusions, and/or communicating results.
define a problem Answered or solved using a science process.
research Use reliable sources of information and or prior investigations to build understanding.
make predictions based on research and prior knowledge
Plan and carry out investigations creating and following steps to collect data (may or may not involve controlled variables)
Collecting data Can be observations and/or measurements
interpret data using charts, tables, and graphics
analyze information Identifying trends and patterns within the data
Defending conclusions An explanation that tells what the investigations showed, based on observations and data
Observation Gathering information using your senses. and/or scientific instrument
Data Measurements or observations collected or recorded in an investigation or experiment.
record keeping Scientists record observations, measurements, notes, pictures, drawings, diagrams and data in a science notebook.
Inference Explanation based on evidence that is NOT directly observed.
Opinion A belief that cannot be verified through measurements and data.
Experiment Experiments are a specific type of investigation that has controlled variables and/or a control group.
Investigation Investigations do not always follow a rigid "science method" but do not involve the use of observations and evidence.
Variable An event, condition, or factor that can be changed or controlled in order to study or test a hypothesis.
Variable you test (change on purpose) ONE part of the experiment that is changed on purpose to test the effects.
Variable you measure The ONE type of data collected as a result of the tested variables
