Sons of Liberty A group of American patriots who protested British control and taxes.
Boycott A refusal to buy certain goods or services as a form of protest.
Republic A government where citizens elect representatives to make decisions.
Federal System A system where power is shared between a central government and smaller units (like states).
Bill of Rights The first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution, protecting individual freedoms.
Political Revolution Major changes in government, often involving the overthrow of existing systems.
Non-political Revolution Major social or economic change not directly involving the government.
Overthrow To remove a leader or government from power, usually by force.
Clergy Church officials who made up the First Estate in France.
Aristocrats Wealthy nobles in pre-revolutionary France.
Bourgeoisie The middle class in France, often wealthy and educated.
Urban Workers Poor laborers in cities who pushed for revolutionary change.
Representative Government A system where citizens elect officials to make decisions on their behalf.
Olympe de Gouges French activist who wrote the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and advocated for equality.
Limited Constitutional Monarchy A government where a monarch’s power is restricted by a constitution.
Emigres Nobles who fled France during the Revolution to avoid persecution.
Sans-Culottes Working-class revolutionaries in France known for their radical views.
Radicals People who want extreme, rapid change, often through force.
Moderates People who seek some change but not extreme actions.
Conservatives People who want to preserve traditional systems and oppose drastic changes.
Jacobins Radical revolutionary group during the French Revolution, led by Robespierre.
Committee of Public Safety Group that led France during the Reign of Terror to protect the revolution.
The Directory Five-man government that ruled France after the Reign of Terror.
