Woodrow Wilson Wrote the Fourteen Points Speech. Wilsonian Idealism was foreign policy Liberal in nature because it promoted democracy and that war is preventable through actions of state.
League of Nations An IGO formed after WWI to prevent future interstate wars. Failed bc the U.S. failed to join, even tho Wilson authored it,
collective security +++ (Claude) Aggression by one state would be treated as an attack on all states. States must commit themselves to world peace, subordinate immediate national interests, give up sovereignty over war decisions, & give up traditional security alliances.
Kellog-Briand Pact (1928) Treaty between U.S. and other Powers condemning war as an instrument of natl. policy.
Fourteen Points Speech Ended WWI. Led to the creation of League of Nations. Created a clar vision post WWII. Denounced secret treaties & land disputes. Blueprint for peaceful INTL order.
anarchy A system in which there is no overarching authority.
Hans Morgenthau Modern Realism theorist-"The Balance of Power"
George Kennan An American diplomat during the Cold War that formulated the U.S.' containment policy.
power The ability of a state to achieve its desired outcome.
Containment +++ Kennan "the adroit and vigilant application of counterforce at a series of constantly shifting geographical and political points, corresponding to the shifts and maneuvers of Soviet policy" basically containing the spread of communism.
bourgeoisie +++ Those who own the means of production in a capitalist system.
proletariat working class who do not own the means of production and must sell their labor to survive.
Vladimir Lenin "Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism" (1917) Lenin believed states will inevitably go to war over raw materials.
monopoly capitalism Two forms: Industrial (control raw materials) & financial (control investment capital). Creates colony-owners, colonies, & dependent countries. Marx's revolution hadnt come bc prolet. had become burgeoisie, or wanted to be led.
women's subordination The unjustified asymmetry between women’s and men’s social, economic, and political positions present in nearly every culture and in most social and political institutions
gender A social construct that produces gender-based characteristics.
patriarchy +++ System of male dominance in which power is exercised by men, for men, & which directly/indirectly limits the opportunities available to women. Lack of opportunity for women in INTL politics.
balance of power
bipolarity Waltz & Mearshimer argue bipolar system is self-contained and multipolar systems are too complex, which can lead to complexities, imbalances, and friction.
multipolarity Morgenthau & Kissinger argue cross-cutting interests help states cooperate
hegemon A dominating power in the unipolar world that must be willing to burden the cost of providing public goods.
public goods Usually provided by hegemons. Anyone can make use of it once it exists even if they didn't contribute to its provision. Includes international free trade order, INTL Monetaryw Fund
Long Cycle Theory (George Modelski) Believed history moved in 100 year cycles with 4 phases: 1) Global War, 2)W

Radical Principle characteristic of world order is capitalism, not anarchy. Policy prescription: The system of global capitalism must be radically transformed.
Feminism Sjoberg=builds on other paradigms, argue global politics cannot be understood w/o reference to gender. Feminists are concerned with women's subordination.
System Level of Analysis-State States behave in similar ways. State behavior results from the operation of the international system. Denounced secret treaties & land disputes.
Hegemonic Stability Theory (Unipolar) Emerged from INTL political economy theory. In a unipolar system, a hegemon must be willing to burden the cost of providing public goods.
Is preponderance of power or balance of power more stable?
Bipolarity or Multipolarity = more stable INTL system?
Feminism and realism Realists believe human nature is fixed. Feminists believe in social constructs, like gender.
Capitalism Economic system that entails private ownership of the means of production, and in which the production/distribution of goods and services is the result of the choices made by firms and individuals in a market setting.
