7 states of matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| solid | particles in a set pattern and vibrating in place, has set volume water will be 0 C |
| liquid | particles slide past each other, have no set shape, has a set volume of water between 0 C and 100 C |
| gas | Particles spread out, move quickly, have no set volume or shape, water is over 100 C |
| Thermal energy | Kinetic and potential energy of all particles in object |
| conduction | transfer of energy from one particle of matter to another when in direct contact |
| convection | transfer of energy that occurs through the movement of fluids |
| radiation | transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves does not require matter to move through |
| Convection current | circular motion of cold air sinks while warm air rises |
| conductors | material that allows the passing of energy easily, metal |
| insulators | material that makes it hard to move energy through, wool, wood, and plastic |
