What is Rh Factor? A protein found on red blood cells.
Antigen Something that your body may attack as foreign
Antibody A protein that helps your immune system attack something that it views as foreign (antigen)
What are the 4 main components of blood? Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets
Plasma Transports cells, nutrients, hormones and waste
Red Blood Transports oxygen and carbon dioxide
White blood Fight infection
Platelets Help with blood clotting
What are the 2 main types of leukocytes? Granulocytes and Agranulocytes
Granulocyte types Neutrophils, eosinophils, bosophils
Agranulocyte types Lymphocytes and monocytes
What are the two main circulatory circuits in the body? Systemic, Pulmonary
Pulmonary Circut Carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs and brings oxygenated blood back to the heart.
Systemic Circut Delivers oxygenated blood to the body and returns deoxygenated blood to the heart.
What are the layers of the heart wall? Endocardium, Myocardium, Epicardium
Endocardium Lines inside of the heart, and creates heart valves, prevents blood from clotting
Myocardium Thickest middle layer and contracts and moves the blood
Epidcardium Outermost layer helps with the development of the heart and creates blood vessels to the heart.
Systole The contraction phase of the heart, when blood is pumped out
Diastole The relaxation phase of the heart, when the chambers fill with blood.
What are the three main types of blood vessels? Arteries, veins, capillaries.
Arteries Carry blood away from the heart
Veins Carry blood to the heart
Capillaries Connect arteries to veins and allow for gas exchange to happen at the tissues
Active immunity Developed after the exposure to an antigen. B cells actively creating antibodies
Passive immunity You were passed the antibodies from someone else (ex. mother to fetus.
What is an autoimmune disease? Condition in which the immune system attacks the body's own cells. (ex-rheumatoid arthritis)
