CH 20
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where do they land? | They surface in the Santa Monica Bay and are picked by the Coast Guard, who are too busy with the earthquake disaster to question them. |
| Why is Percy wet? | Percy willed himself to get soaked so the Coast Guard wouldn't notice he was dry, or that Grover was missing shoes (hooves) |
| What is Annabeth's realization? | She concedes that the whole Underworld encounter was a trick and a strategy worthy of Athena. |
| The True Prophecy: | Percy confirms the prophecy was right. "You shall go west and face the god who has turned" But the god was not Hades. |
| Who is the true traitor? | The traitor is Ares, who stole both the Master Bold and Hades's Helm of Darkness, and framed Percy to start a three-way war. |
| What does Ares confess? | Ares admits he didn't steal the items personally (Gods can't take symbols of power directly, but he used a hero (later implied to be Luke's earlier failed quest) |
| What was Ares's motive? | He wants a three-way slugfest among the BIg Three because it would be the "bloodiest" and best kind of war. Ares pulls out Hades's Helm of Darkness (disguised as a ski cap) and places it on his motorcycle. |
| What was the backpack trick? | The backpack Percy was given is the Master Bolt's sheath, which was morphed to allow the bolt to return to it only once they reached the Underworld (near Hades) |
| Why did Ares send the bolt to Hades | Percy realizes sending the bolt to Hades wasn't Ares's idea and that he is taking orders from the voice in the pit. |
| What was Ares's threat? | He snaps his fingers, summoning a giant, razor-tusked wild boar to kill Percy. |
| How does Percy defeat the boar? | Percy faces the boar, uncaps Riptide, slashes off its right tusk, and then uses his power to summon a wave that engulfs and swallows the boar back into the sea. |
| What are Ares's weapons? | Ares is stronger, immortal, and his sword has a much longer reach. Percy is forced onto dry land, where he is weaker. |
| What is God's vision? | Percy realizes he's experiencing ADHD as an advantage; he is now wide awake, noticing every little detail, including where Ares is tensing up. |
| How do the police interfere? | multiple police cars arrive and explode when Ares releases a wall of red flame |
| How does Percy use the water against Ares? | Percy enters the surf and holds back the tide by force of will, creating immense pressure. As Ares raises his sword for the kill, Percy releases the wave, which smashes Ares full in the face, disorienting him. |
| What is Ichor? | Golden blood of the gods flows from the wound. Ares screams and curses. |
| What stops Ares from killing Percy? | A cold, heavy presence passes over the beach, draining light, sound, and color, making time slow down and life feel hopeless. It is the same presence from the Pit of Tartarus. |
| What is Ares's curse? | Ares, stunned by the dark presence, curses Percy: "every time you raise your blade in battle, every time you hope for success, you will feel my curse" He then reveals his true immortal form and disappears. |
| What is the furries; decision? | The Furies (including Mrs. Dodds) appear, witness the truth, and no longer look threatening. Percy gives Mrs. Dodds the Helm of Darkness and tells her to return it to Hades and warn him to call off the war. |
| What was the Pit | Percy and Annabeth understand that the voice and the presence that stopped Ares was far more powerful than the gods; one of the Titans or, worse, the Titans' father (Kronos) |
| The Deadline: | They must get the Master Bolt to Olympus by tonight (the summer solstice) |
| The Final Risk: | To make it, Percy must fly on an airplane, despite Zeus's warning, while carrying the bolt |
