evaporation the heating up of liquid water into water vapor
condensation the cooling of water vapor back into a liquid
precipitation rain, snow, sleet & hail
accumulation the process where water gathers in large bodies like oceans, lakes, rivers, and groundwater
runoff water that runs off the land into other areas
groundwater water that falls on land as precipitation and soaks into the ground to fill tiny spaces between rocks and soil
percolation when water soaks deep into the ground moving downward through cracks and spaces in the soil and rock
water vapor water in its gas form which is invisible and floats in the air
conservation the process of using materials and natural resources wisely
natural resource a material found in nature that can be used by people
renewable resources natural resources that can be replenished naturally over a short time meaning they won't run out
nonrenewable resources natural resources that exist in limited supplies and take millions of years to form so they can be used up and won't be replaced quickly
reduce to use less of something
reuse to use something multiple times
recycle to create new materials out of old materials
pollution the introduction of harmful materials into the environment
biofuel a special type of fuel made from plants or animal waste (renewable resource)
fossil fuel energy sources like coal, oil, and natural gas that formed over millions of years from the buried remains of ancient plants and animals (nonrenewable resources)
petroleum a naturally occurring, dark, oily liquid found deep underground (a type of fossil fuel)
