| law of conservation of energy | Energy cannot be created or destroyed |
| conduction | The direct transfer of heat from one substance to another substance that it is touching. |
| radiation | The transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves |
| kinetic energy | energy of motion |
| convection | The transfer of thermal energy by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas |
| specific heat | The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a substance by 1 degree celcius |
| coolant | a liquid or gas that is used to remove heat from something |
| insulator | A material that does not allow heat or electrons to move through it easily. |
| chemical potential energy | Energy stored in chemical bonds |
| gravitational energy | Energy stored by objects due to their position above Earth's surface. |
