| order of operations | the order in which to perform operations when evaluating expressions with more than one operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division |
| algebraic expression | a mathematical expression containing numbers, variables, and operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) |
| simplify an expression | to rewrite an expression to have no like terms and no parenthesis |
| complex fraction | a fraction that has at least one fraction in the numerator, denominator, or both |
| constant of proportionality | the number 'k' in the direct variation equation y = kx |
| cross products | when multiplying fractions, the numerator of the first fraction is multiplied by the denominator of the second fraction; then the numerator of the second fraction is multiplied by the denominator of the first fraction |
| direct variation | two quantities 'x' and 'y' are directly varied when y = kx, where 'k' is a number and 'k' cannot equal 0 |
| inverse variation | two quantities 'x' and 'y' are inversely varied when y = k/x, where 'k' is a number and 'k' cannot equal 0 |
| proportion | an equation stating that two ratios are equivalent |
| proportional | when two quantities form a proportion, they are call this |
| rate | a ratio of two quantities using different units |
| ratio | a comparison of two quantities, using division |
| slope | a ratio of the change in 'y' (vertical change) to the change in 'x' (horizontal change) between any two points on a line; It is a measure of the steepness of a line |
| unit rate | a rate that compares a quantity to one unit of another quantity |
