Types of Conflict

| character vs. character | the main character clashes with another character |
| character vs. self | the main character battles with himself/herself |
| character vs. nature | the main character fights to endure or overcome forces of nature |
| character vs. society | the main character challenges a law, tradition, or institution |
| character vs. supernatural | the main character resists forces that are not of this world |
| character vs. technology | the main character resists technological forces |
| conflict | a problem that the main character or characters face |
| protagonist | the main character or one of the major characters in a drama, movie, novel, or other fictional texts |
| antagonist | a person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something; usually the bad guy in a story |
| person vs. self | - A young man goes through hard times after losing his father in a car accident. - An Olympic athlete pushes his performance to the limit despite his physical disability. |
| person vs. society | - A student takes his fight against the school dress code all the way to the Supreme Court. - A group of students protest in front of a university known for its unfair and racially motivated admission practices. |
| person vs. nature | - A castaway washes up on an island and must learn to survive with the available resources. - A ship captain pursues a great white whale through stormy seas. |
