| Expression | a statement involving at least two different numbers (known or unknown) and at least one operation |
| Variable | A symbol typically a letter that holds a place for constants often numbers |
| algebraic expression | an expression that contains numbers operations and one or more symbols |
| cube root | a number that when multiplied by itself and then multiplied by itself again equals a given number |
| perfect cube | the result of multiplying a number by itself three times |
| conjecture | an unproven statement about a general mathematical concept |
| rule/theorom | a proven statement about a general mathematical concept |
| equation | a statement that two expressions are equal |
| linear equation in one variable | an equation that can be written in the form ax + b = 0 where a and b are constants and a does not equal 0 |
| solution | a value that makes an equation true |
| inverse operations | two operations that undo each other such as addition and subtraction |
| equivalent equations | equations that have the same solution |
| mean | the sum of numerical data set divided by the number of data values |
| identity | an equation that is true for all values of the variable |
| absolute value equation | an equation that contains an absolute value expression |
| extraneous solution | an apparent solution that must be rejected because it does not satisfy the original equation |
| literal equation | an equation that has two or more variables |
| formula | a literal equation that shows how one variable is related to one or more other variables |
