| central idea | main idea of a writing; the point the author wants you to remember most |
| citation | a quotation from or reference to a book, paper, or author, especially a scholarly work |
| claim | an assertion of something as a fact |
| connotative | signifying a secondary meaning, in addition to the primary meaning |
| counterclaim | a claim made to rebut a previous claim |
| credibility | the quality of being trusted and believed in |
| denotative | the direct, dictionary meaning of a word |
| diction | the choice and use of words and phrases in speech and writing |
| ethos | an appeal to ethics and credibility |
| explicit | stated clearly and in detail, leaving no room for confusion or doubt |
| fallacious reasoning | faulty or mistaken logic |
| fallacy | a mistaken belief, especially on based on unsound argument |
| inference | a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning |
| logos | an appeal to logic and reason |
| pathos | an appeal to emotions |
| point of view | the author's perspective on a topic |
| purpose | the author's reason for writing the piece |
| relevant | closely connected or appropriate to the matter at hand |
| rhetoric | the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques |
