Referral When a primary doctor sends a patient to a specialist.
Phlebotomy Drawing blood from a vein.
Cannula Small flexible tube inserted into a vein for fluids or medication.
Blood-borne Pathogen Disease-causing microorganism found in blood (ex: HIV, Hepatitis B).
Universal Precautions Treating all blood/body fluids as infectious; includes gloves and PPE.
Leukocytes White blood cells; fight infection
Erythrocytes Red blood cells; carry oxygen.
Thrombocytes (Platelets) help blood clot
hemoglobin Protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.
Sickle Cell Disease Genetic disorder where red blood cells are crescent-shaped.
Leukemia Cancer of white blood cells.
Hematocrit Percentage of red blood cells in blood.
Anemia Low red blood cell count or low hemoglobin.
Polycythemia Too many red blood cells.
Complete Blood Count (CBC) Measures RBCs, WBCs, platelets, hemoglobin.
Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) Measures glucose, electrolytes, kidney function.
Lipid Panel (Cholesterol Test) Measures cholesterol and triglycerides.
Saturated Fat Solid at room temperature; raises LDL cholesterol.
Unsaturated Fat Liquid at room temperature; healthier for heart.
Hypercholesterolemia High cholesterol in blood
Plaque (Cholesterol) Fatty buildup in arteries.
Brachiocephalic Vein Large vein that drains blood into the superior vena cava.
Subclavian Vein Drains blood from arm into brachiocephalic vein.
Axillary Vein Drains blood from shoulder/upper arm
Greater Cephalic Vein Superficial vein on thumb side of arm.
Median Cubital Vein Common vein used for blood draws (inside elbow).
Basilic Vein Superficial vein on pinky side of arm.
