Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis

QuestionAnswer
What does photosynthesis need to begin? Sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.
What are the two products of photosynthesis? Glucose and oxygen
In which organelle does photosynthesis occur? The chloroplast.
What is chlorophyll’s job? It absorbs sunlight for photosynthesis and appears green because it reflects green light.
What happens if carbon dioxide is removed from a plant’s environment? The plant cannot make glucose.
What happens if you increase light intensity on a plant? Photosynthesis increases, then levels off at a maximum rate.
Why do underwater plants do less photosynthesis? Less light reaches them and CO₂ levels can be lower.
What happens when temperature increases from 50°F to 78°F? Photosynthesis increases due to optimal enzyme activity
What happens at extremely high temperatures like 135°F? Photosynthesis drops or stops because enzymes denature.
What are the two reactants needed for cellular respiration? Glucose and oxygen.
What are the three products of cellular respiration? Carbon dioxide, water, and ATP.
In which organelle does cellular respiration occur? The mitochondria.
What gas is released by cellular respiration? Carbon dioxide.
How is ATP different from ADP? ATP has 3 phosphates (full battery); ADP has 2 (partially charged).
What does ATP synthase do? It adds a phosphate to ADP to build ATP.
Why is the inner mitochondrial membrane folded? To increase surface area for the electron transport chain, where most ATP is made.
What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic processes? Aerobic needs oxygen; anaerobic does not
Which cellular respiration steps are aerobic? Krebs Cycle and Electron Transport Chain (ETC).
Which step is anaerobic? Glycolysis (and fermentation).
What are the two types of fermentation and who performs them? Lactic acid fermentation (animals & some bacteria); alcoholic fermentation (yeast & some bacteria)
Why does a candle burn longer in jar with a plant? The plant produces oxygen, which helps the candle burn longer.
What gas is a plant giving off when placed in bright sunlight? Oxygen
Why does blood glucose drop during prolonged exercise? Muscles use glucose for cellular respiration to make ATP
Which organisms perform cellular respiration? All organisms—plants, animals, fungi, protists, bacteria.
Which organisms perform photosynthesis? Plants, algae, and some bacteria.
What is the difference between autotrophs and heterotrophs? Autotrophs make their own food; heterotrophs get energy by eating other organisms.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
