Twenties & Depression

Radio Made the broadcast of news, sports, entertainment, and advertising possible around the world. Start of mass media and communication. Created a shared experience for everyone.
Model T Ford The car that ordinary Americans could buy. It opened up many new opportunities and gave a sense of freedom to the people. It also opened up more jobs for the unemployed.
Flappers Young rebellious women of the 1920s who wore short dresses, cut their hair short, wore makeup, and challenged conservative ideas about what women should do or wear. Beginning of great rights and opportunities for women.
"Red Scare" An intense fear of communism brought on by the Russian Revolution. Immigrants were targeted, detained, arrested, and even deported. This is an important aspect of the 1920s.
Prohibition The ban on alcohol in the United States. People believed it was the issue in society and thought banning it would improve the quality of life. This was causing more problems than it was solving so it was appealed in 1933.
Al Capone The greatest gangster of the 1920s. Prime example of how crime increased when the prohibition was in place. He bribed cops, judges, and local politicians so he wouldn't be arrested.
KKK Racist organization, wanted to lower the power of immigrants, African Americans, and Catholics. First established after the Civil War and then it was suppressed by the government but then came back in 1920s.
Great Depression The worst economic downturn in American History. People lost everything and suffered. This was carried out through the 1930s.
Gross Domestic Product A leading economic indicator. The total $ value of all goods and services produced within a country in a given year. GDP going up is good and decreasing is bad.
Unemployment To be unemployed means to be out of work and actively looking for a job. Not everyone that isn't working is considered unemployed. One of the worst aspects of the Great Depression, there was very little help for the unemployed.
Inflation/deflation Level of prices/price stability. Inflation is the prices rising and deflation is the prices dropping. During the depression they went through a deflation which may seem good but it signaled that people had no $ couldn't buy anything.
Stock Market Crash A basic cause for the depression. Massive set off, caused prices of stock to drop dramatically. $20 million disappeared and sent shock waves throughout the economy.
Election of 1932 There were 2 different philosophies of government. Herbert Hoover believed in the government not doing to much and Franklin D. Roosevelt believed that the government needs to get involved. Known as the "watershed election".
The New Deal Roosevelt's plan for pulling the economy out of the depression. Included a # of government programs.
Civilian Conservation Corps Put young men to work by doing outdoor jobs and making the environment better. Their clothing, healthcare, and shelter was paid for and they got paid. Roosevelt did this so they were putting money back into the economy. It was his favorite program.
Social Security Act Best example of lasting change. Designed to help out old folks and economy. He knew once giving the old folks money they were going to put it right back into the economy. This created a system of federal unemployment pay.
