Renaissance

Renaissance means “rebirth”; a time where education, art, and critical thinking became important; originated in Italy but spread throughout Europe
Florence a city-state in Italy; the birthplace of the Renaissance
De Medici Family rich banking family; contributed to the arts and had some control over the government
Humanism a form of art where realistic scenes, images, and human figures were created
Leonardo da Vinci Italian Renaissance artist that painted famous paintings like “The Last Supper” and “Mona Lisa”; he was also an engineer, architect, sculptor, and scientist
Michelangelo Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, poet, engineer, and architect; famous works include the mural on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and the sculpture of David
Botticelli Italian Renaissance painter who painted members of the Medici family and religious figures
Johannes Gutenberg German inventor of the printing press and movable type
Printing press Renaissance invention; made the mass production of printed books and other texts possible; led to an increase in education and literacy
Machiavelli Italian Renaissance writer and politician; observed rulers and created a set of rules that encouraged those in charge to maintain their power through absolute rule
Absolute rule a ruler who has total power
Architecture the art of designing buildings
Anatomy study of the structure of the human body
Realism the idea of painting and sculpting subjects realistically; it involves many techniques that make the subjects and background look like they would in real life
Philosophy the study of the creation of knowledge, reality, and human existence
Literature written works (books, poems, stories, etc.)
Frescos water color done on wet plaster that can tell the stories and cultures of the areas around it
Patron a person who provides financial support for the arts
Sculptor a person who makes statues out of wood, stone, marble, or other material
