What did the 13th Amendment do? Abolished Slavery/Made it illegal in all of the US
What did the 14th Amendment do? Granted citizenship rights to those born in the US
What did the 15th Amendment do? Granted the right to vote to al MALE citizens
How was the 13th Amendment relevant to Georgia during Reconstruction? It had to ratify it before it could rejoin the Union
When the South (confederate states) refused to ratify the 14th Amendment, what happened to them? They were placed under 5 military districts with marshal law implemented.
Lincolns plan required the voting population in the South to do what? 10% was required to swear an oath to the US Constitution before they could rejoin the Union
What was Lincolns plan revolved around? He wanted them to rejoin to restore the Union as soon as possible.
Johnsons plan was similar to Lincolns and considered to be to easy by Congress in what fashion? He also only requires 10% of the voting aged population to swear an oath to the US Constitution before they could rejoin the Union
Congress required states to adopt new state constitutions to protect AA's freedoms and rights. How did that differ from Lincoln and Johnson? Lincoln and Johnson were more concerned with restoring the Union whereas Congress wanted to protect the rights of blacks and they were more punitive
These individuals sought to protect blacks' rights to vote while providing clothing and food to blacks and poor whites. Their main goal was to help blacks adjust to life being free. Freedmen's Bureau
The Freedmen's Bureau was most successful in what? Setting up over 4,000 schools providing educational opportunities for blacks
The Freedmen's Bureau lacked the resources to prevent what? To take on the racial violence, especially from groups like the KKK
The KKK fought to deny blacks political and social control by trying to deny them voting to put who in control in the South Democrats
The KKK's main goal was to establish what? White supremacy
After the Civil War, blacks saw large amounts of AA representation in the government, especially in the Georgia General Assembly. Why were they expelled? To prevent AA's from getting positions of power to have influential voices representing them in the government.
After slavery was abolished, this agricultural practice grew as many former slaves returned to their former masters (land owners) where they had no say in the crops they were to grow as land owners needed workers and former slaves worked their land Sharecropping
These individuals owned their own equipment, usually their own seeds, and often owned their own animals (mules for tilling) Tenant Farmers
Had to rent land from the landowners Both sharecroppers and Tenant Farmers
Had to provide a share of their crops to the landowners (one had to give 50% or more) Both sharecroppers and tenant formers
Under these laws, blacks were not allowed to vote, testify against whites in court, and could not serve as jurors. Black Codes
