Solutions Vocabulary
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Soluble | Describes a substance that can be dissolved in a given solvent |
| Insoluble | Describes a substance that cannot be dissolved in a given solvent |
| Solution | may exist as solids, liquids, or gases |
| Solvent | substance that does the dissolving |
| Solute | substance that is being dissolved |
| Electrolyte | ionic compound that dissolves in solution (creating ions) and conducts electricity. |
| Nonelectrolyte | covalent compound that dissolves in solution but does not ionize, so it does not conduct an electrical current |
| Saturated Solution | Contains the maximum amount of dissolved solute for a given amount of solvent at a specific temperature and pressure. |
| Unsaturated Solution | Contains less dissolved solute than a saturated solution; has further capacity to hold more solute. |
| Supersaturated Solution | Contains more dissolved solute than a saturated solution at the same temperature. |
| Miscible | Two liquids that combine in any ratio to form a homogeneous mixture. |
| Immiscible | solutions that will not mix together & remain separate even after mixing |
| Concentration Solution | a measure of how much solute is dissolved in a specific amount of solvent or solution |
| Dilute Solution | A solution with a relatively small amount of solute dissolved in a solvent, meaning its concentration is low. |
| Molarity | number of moles of solute dissolved per liter of solution |
