Cahokia A large earthen mound located in Southern Illinois.
Tenochtitlan Capital of the Aztecs located on an island in the middle of a lake grew to almost 200,000 people making it one of the largest cities in the world.
Theocracy A government ruled by religious leaders (Aztec's government)
Carpa Nan a massive roadway system built by the Incas
Human Sacrifice used during religious ceremonies usually captives
Mita system Instead of paying tribute conquered people preformed mandatory public service
Latin America made up of Mexico, central America, south America, and Caribbean islands
Matrilineal Society Social standing was determined by the women's side of the family
Great pyramid Made of stone by the Aztecs at the center of Tenochtitlan it rose 150ft into the air
Pocheta A special Aztec merchant class that traded in luxury goods
Mississipian first large-scale civilization in north America that emerged in the 700s or 800s they built enormous earthen mounds
Pachacuti tribal leader who began conquering tribes his military victories combined the small tribes into a full-fledged state the Inca Empire
Temple of the sun Honored the sun and royal ancestor veneration it was in Cuzco and formed the core of Incan religion
Quipa system of knotted strings used to record numerical information for trade and engineering and for recording messages to be carried throughout the empire
City-state The main form of Mayan government was the city-state each ruled by a king and consisting of a city and its surrounding territory
Chinampas on lake Texcoco the Aztecs built floating gardens to increase the amount of space for food production
