what is transformation? change in genotype and phenotype due to the assimilation of external DNA by a cell
what are bacteriophages/phages? a virus that infects bacteria
what is a virus? DNA or RNA enclosed by a protective coat. produces by infecting a cell and taking over its metabolic machinery
what is a double helix? form of native DNA, referring to its 2 adjacent antiparallel polynucleotide strans wound into a spiral shape
what is antiparallel? subunits running in opposite directions
what is needed for a DNA nucleotide? a deoxyribose sugar, a phosphate group, and one of the four nitrogenous bases
what are the bases found in DNA? adenine, thymine, cytosine, guanine
what are the bonds found in DNA? hydrogen bonds between nucleotides and covalent bonds connecting phosphate group and sugar
