UNIT 3 CHEM TEST

QuestionAnswer
A form of Radiation that is a high speed electron formed by the decay of a neutron into a proton. What is a Beta Particle? Beta Particle
Heavy, Slow, positively charged particle that is a form of ionizing radiation? Alpha Particle
The number of electrons an atom of an element will lose or gain in a chemical reaction? Oxidation Number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom? Atomic Number
The repulsion between these subatomic particles is responsible for the volume of an atom? Electron Cloud
An atom that has lost electrons? Cation
Who proposed the model that said that electrons were confined to specific energy orbits around the nucleus of the atom? Bohr Model
Who proposed the Quantum Model also known as the Electron cloud model? Schrodinger
Who made the Gold Foil Experiment and the Nuclear Model? Rutherford
Who proposed the solid sphere model? Dalton
Who made the Cathode Ray experiments and the Plum Pudding Model? Thompson
Who was the first to propose the ideas of atoms? Democritus
What golds the electrons to the nucleus of the atom? The electrons are held to the nucleus of an atom by the electromagnetic force. The negative and positive charges attract.
Why do elements with more than one proton in the nucleus need neutrons in the nucleus in order to be stable? To provide the strong nuclear force.
What is the difference between the plum pudding model and the nuclear model of the atom? The plum pudding model suggested the atom was a positive sphere with negative electrons embedded in it. Whereas the nuclear model established the atom has a dense positive nucleus orbited by electrons in mostly empty space.
What is the difference between the proton model of the atom and the Bohr model of the atom? The nuclear model established the atoms tiny dense positive nucleus and orbiting electrons in mostly empty space while the Bohr model built upon this by introducing the concept of the energy levels.
What are the three subatomic particles? What are their Charges? Where are they Located? Proton, Neutron, and electrons + 0 - NUCLEUS Electron Cloud
How do you know the amount of electrons if its not the same as the protons? If the charge is negative its more than the protons. If the charge is positive its less than the protons.
What is the repulsion between these subatomic particles is responsible for the volume of an atom? Electron
What is a Ion? A element that has a charge.
What is the symbol for AAM (Average Atomic Mass)? u
For finding the Relative abundance when it doesn't give you the percentages you what Make a line and put the number on the number line.
Fusion occurs when Heavier nuclei combine to form lighter ones
What is fission? Splitting of 1 larger atom into 2 or more smaller ones.
Which type of nuclear reaction does not generate radioactive waste? Fission or Fusion? Fusion
What is the name of the process that is responsible for the creation of a new element int he universe? Nucleosynthesis
Period and series are also known as? Rows
Groups and Families are also known as? Columns
Elements in the same family(column) on the periodic table have the same number of? Valence electrons
Elements in the same period on the periodic table have the same number of? Energy levels
When making a full energy level what is the logic When you are at calcium you need to loose 2 its easier so it would be 2+ When you are at Oxygen you need to gain to so it would be 2-
Malleable shiny and conductive are properties of a? Metal
Shiny brittle and a particle conductor of electricity are properties of? Non metal
What is a oxidation number? The amount it takes for a element to get a full energy level.
What is a Anion? A negatively charged ion.
What is the Atomic Theory? The idea that matter is made up of fundamental particles called atoms.
What is a Chain reaction? Radioactive decay that increases exponentially as the nuclear reaction proceeds.
What are the coinage metals? Copper silver and gold
Gamma Radiation A type of radiation produced by radioactive decay. The pure energy and is not a particle.
What is a Half-life? The amount of time it takes for half of a sample of a radioactive element to decay into another element.
Who is Marie Curie? Discovered the element radium with her husband Pierre and coined the term radioactivity.
What is a Mass spectrometer? A device that separates the different isotopes found in a sample of an element using a magnetic field.
What is the nuclear model? A model proposed by Rutherford that state that the atom is mostly empty space and that there is a small. dense, positively charged nucleus in the center of the atom.
What is an Oil rig? Mnemonic for oxidation reduction.
What is the Plum pudding model? A model proposed by Thomson after his discovery of the electron. The atom was a positive pudding with many small negative electrons embedded in it like plum's embedded in the pudding.
What tis the electron cloud model? Developed by Schrodinger. Electrons are too small to know the location and the momentum precisely so the location of the electrons are described using probabity.
What are quarks? The subatomic particles that make up protons and neutrons.
Who was Thomson? He discovered the electron when performing the Cathode Ray tube experiments. This led him to propose the plum Pudding model of the atom.
What are the radioactive isotopes? Have a Mass greater than 83 or it does not contain enough neutrons.
What is Radioactive decay? The spontaneous emission of radiation by an unstable nucleus.
