| sublingual/buccal | placed under tongue or inside cheeck to slowly dissolve and be absorbed by mucous lining |
| External administrations | medications administered externally include inunctions, ointments, pastes, plasters, transdermal patches, & solutions |
| inunctions | oily or medicated substances rubbed into skin for local rx |
| ointments | oil, petroleum jelly combined with drugs for long-lasting topical medication |
| pastes | ointments with a fat base usually produce cooling feeling on skin |
| plasters | thicker than ointment spread to relieve pain and decrease inflammation, put on cloth, paper, or directly on skin |
| transdermal patches | adhesive patches containing types of slow release medication, gradually absorbed thru the skin |
| solutions | can be administered externally consisting principally of bacteriostatics |
