| Term | Definition |

| Nervous system | A complex network of nerves and cells that transmits signals throughout the body, that controls voluntary and involuntary movements like blinking, breathing, and heart rate. |
| Brain | a complex organ in the body that serves as the control center for thinking, memory, and movement. |
| gyrus (gyri) | a ridge or fold on the surface of the brain's cerebral cortex. |
| sulcus (sulci) | a groove on the cerebral cortex. |
| cerebrum | The largest part of the brain. controls coordination and volentary activity in the body. |
| frontal lobe | largest of the 4 lobes it controls decision making and problem solving, voluntary movement, and personality. |
| parietal lobe | responsible for sensory information like touch, temperature, pain and spatial movement. |
| temporal lobe | responsible for processing sounds and languages, and recognizing faces and objects |
| occipital lobe | processes visual information like sight and recognizing shapes and colors. |
| cerabelllum | coordinates voluntary movements, maintain balance, and regulate posture. |
| brain stem | base of the brain, controls autonomic functions necessary for life like breathing, and blood pressure. |
| pons | part of the brainstem located above the medulla and below the mid brain. |
| medulla oblongata | responsible for regulating several essential functions of the autonomic nervous system |
| spinal cord | long bundle of nerves and tissue that extends from. the bae of the brain to the lower back |
| nerves | nerves that transmit signals between the brain spinal cord and the rest of the body |
| sensory neuron | a nerve cell that transmits sensory information from the body's sensory receptors to the central nervous system |
| moter neuron | a nerve cell that transmits signals from the brain of spinal cord to muscles or glands to make movement of control physiological functions |
| traumatic brain injury | damage to the brain resulting from an external force such as a hit in the head |
| chronic traumatic encephalopathy | a progressive neuro degenerative disease caused by repeated head trauma |
| concussion | a traumatic brain injury that affects the brain function |
| neurological exam | a series of tests used to evaluate the function of the central and peripheral nervous system |
