| Concomitant | Taking place at the same time |
| Chronic | Long duration |
| Iatrogenic | Induced inadvertently by physician or surgeon or by medical treatment or diagnostic procedure |
| HAI's | Hospital-acquired infections or nosocomial infection |
| HAI rate | Number of HAI's divided by number of discharges, including deaths |
| Infection Rate | Number of infections divided by number of discharges including deaths |
| Surgical Site infections (SSI) or postoperative infection | Infections that occur after surgery |
| SSI rate | Number of infection divided by number of operations |
| Surgical Procedure | Any single, separate, systematic process upon or within the body that can be complete in itself |
| Surgical Operation | One or more surgical procedures performed at one time for one patient via common approach |
| Complication Rate | Number of patients with complications divided by number of discharges |
| Complication | A medical condition that arises during an IP hospitalization |
| Consultation Rate | Number of patients receiving a consult divided by number of patients discharged, including deaths |
| Readmission Rate | Number of patients readmitted within 30 days divided my number discharged (excluding deaths) |
| Unit Labor Cost | Total annual compensation divided by total annual productivity |
| Annual Productivity | Multiply amount of work completed per day by the number of workdays per year |

| Productivity | A unit of performance defined by management in quantitative standards. |
| Labor Productivity | Completed work divided by time to produce total work output |
| Budget | A plan that converts the organization's goals and objectives into targets for revenue and spending |
| Fiscal Year | Any consecutive 12-month period, used as an accounting period |
| Operational Budget | Allocates and controls resources to meet goals and objectives for the fiscal year |
