Weathering The mechanical breakdown of rocks without changing their chemical composition
Physical weathering The scraping or wearing away of rocks by friction from other rocks, wind, or water.
Abrasion The breakdown of rocks caused by chemical reactions, changing their mineral composition.
Chemical weathering A type of chemical weathering in which oxygen reacts with minerals, often producing rust in iron-rich rocks.
Oxidation Rain, snow, or fog that is more acidic than normal, speeding up chemical weathering.
Acid precipitation The movement of sediments or rocks from one location to another by water, wind, ice, or gravity.
Erosion The laying down of sediments in a new location after being transported.
Floodplain The flat area of land next to a river that floods when the river overflows
Delta A triangular deposit of sediments formed where a river meets a larger body
Alluvial fan A fan-shaped deposit of sediments formed where a fast-flowing stream slows down upon reaching flatter land
Groundwater Water that saturates soil and rock beneath the Earth’s surface.
Shoreline The boundary where land meets a body of water.
Beach An area of loose sediment along a shoreline, often sand or pebbles. Sandba
Sandbar A submerged or partially exposed ridge of sand built up by water current
Barrier island A long, narrow island parallel to the coast, protecting the mainland from waves and storms.
Dune A hill or ridge of sand formed by wind deposition.
Loess fine silt or clay deposited by wind, often creating fertile soil.
Glacier A large, slow-moving mass of ice formed from compacted snow.
Glacial drift Sediment deposited by a glacier.
Creep The slow downhill movement of soil or rock due to gravity.
Rockfall The rapid downward movement of rocks from a steep slope.
Landslide The sudden movement of soil, rock, or debris down a slope.
Mudflow A rapid flow of water-saturated soil and debris down a slope, often following heavy rain.
Mountain A landform that rises prominently above its surroundings, usually with steep slopes.
Lake A body of water surrounded by land.
River A natural flowing body of water that moves toward another water body.
Coastline The outline of a coast where land meets the ocean or sea.
