Elliptical Galaxy Spherical or flattened disks
Spiral Galaxy A nucleus of bright stars and two or more spiral arms
Irregular Galaxy No definite shape
Light Year A unit of measurement to measure the distance to stars and galaxies in Space; equal to the distance light travels in one year
Universe Composed of matter and energy
Nebula Gas and dust; exist in Space and are remnants from the formation of the universe
Rate of the Expansion of the Universe This means that for every mega parsec (3.3 millions light years) from Earth, the universe is expanding an extra 73+2.5 Km per second
Red-Shift Light is shifted to the end of the spectrum
Gravity A force that pulls objects toward each other and is affected by mass and proximity
Rotation The spinning motion of a planet on its axis
Revolution An elliptical orbit around a central body; around the sun in the case of the solar system
Spring Tide When the trial change is greatest. (Full moon and new moon)
Neap Tide A Tide just after the first or third quarters of the moon when there is the least difference between high and low water
Earth's Axis 23 1/2 degrees; remains of the same angle and points in the same direction as Earth revolves around the Sun
Soltsices Either of the two times in the year, the summer solstice and the winter solstice, marked by the longest and shortest days
Equinoxes When day and night are of Equal length (about September 22 and March 20
New Moon Moon phase that occurs when the moon is between Earth and the Sun, at which point the moon cannot be seen because its lighted half is facing the Sun and its darkside faces Earth
Full Moon The sunlit portion of the moon is facing the Earth while Earth is positioned between the Sun and Moon (Moon is completely visible
Moon Waxes Sunlit portion increases - Moving from new to full
Moon Wanes Sunlit portion decreases - Moving from full to new
Crescent Moon Less than 1/2 of the sunlit portion of the moon is visible
Gibbous Moon Greater than 1/2 of the sunlit portion is visible
Photo Sphere The visible surface of the Sun
Corona The outermost layer of the Sun's atmosphere
Radiative Zone of the Sun Layer of the Sun immediately surrounding the cave where energy moves atom to atom as electromagnetic waves
Convention Zone The outermost layer of the Sun's interior where heated plasma rises to the surface where it is then ceeded and condensed
Sunspot Areas of gas on the Sun's surface that are cooler than the gases around them
Solar Flare And eruption of gas from the sun's surface that occurs when the loops in sunspot regions suddenly connect
Prominence A loop of gas that protrudes from the Sun's surface, linking parts of sunspot regions
Core of Sun Hotter and denser than the surface
Solar Wind A stream of electrically charged particles produced by the sun's corona
Eclipse Occurs when an object in space passes directly between two objects or between the object and viewers
Solar Eclipse Occurs when the moon passes directly between the Sun and Earth, blocking the Sun's light and casting a shadow over a certain area of Earth
Lunar Eclipse Occurs when Earth passes directly between the Sun and the moon, blocking the Sun's light so that Earth's shadow hits the moon casting a shadow over the moon
Umbra The darkest part of a shadow
