Muscular System: General Terminology
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Agonist | The primary muscle that contracts and caused the movement. |
| Antagonist | The opposing muscle that relaxes and lengthens to allow agonist's motion. |
| Skeletal Muscle | Striated (long, cylindrical appearance) muscle that is found all over body and allows movement. |
| Smooth Muscle | Only found in internal organs & blood vessels. These are involuntary muscles and we don't even feel them. They're shaped like a spindle and don't have a striated look, instead the muscle is literally smooth. |
| Cardiac Muscle | Found only in the heart and are involuntary by controlling the heartbeat. Like skeletal muscle, it's a striated look and texture. |
| Automaticity | Muscle's ability to contract without nerve involvement. |
| Contractility | Ability of a muscle to contract or shorten. |
| Elasticity | Muscle ability to return to normal after being stretched. |
| Excitability | Ability of a muscle to receive and respond to stimuli by contracting. |
| Extensibility | Ability of the muscle to be stretched. |
| Origin | The end of the muscle that is anchored or where no motion takes place. |
| Insertion | The opposite end of the origin -- where motion takes place at a joint. |
| Tendons | Attaches muscle to bone. |
| Ligaments | Attach bone to bone (contributes greatly to joint stability). |
