What makes a nucleus unstable? An uneven ratio of neutrons to protons, especially when atomic number > 83.
What is half-life? The time required for half of a radioactive sample to decay.
Does half-life depend on temperature or pressure? No, it stays constant regardless of conditions.
What happens to a 20 g sample after 3 half-lives? A: 2.5 g remains (20 → 10 → 5 → 2.5).
What is the half-life of Carbon-14? About 5730 years.
What is artificial transmutation? A man-made nuclear reaction caused by bombarding a nucleus with particles.
What is nuclear fusion? Two small nuclei combine to form one larger nucleus, releasing energy.
What powers the sun Nuclear fusion of hydrogen isotopes into helium.
What is nuclear fission? large nucleus splits into smaller ones, releasing energy and neutrons.
What is a chain reaction? Neutrons from fission cause more nuclei to split, repeating the process.
