Terms&QuestionsDefinitions&answers
What is the equation for weight? Weight=mass x gravitational field strength
What is the order of the planets in our solar system? Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
What is the Geocentric model? That the Earth is at the centre of the universe
What is the Heliocentric model? That the Earth and other planets orbit the sun
What is an asteroid? A small rocky body orbiting the sun
Where does an asteroid belt lie? It lies between Mars and Jupiter and orbits the sun
What is a comet? A ball of dust and frozen gas/ice. They have very elliptical orbits
What is a planet? A celestrial body moving in an elliptical orbit round a star
What is a star? A ball of gas that emits light and radiation.
What is a difference between the bigbang and steady state theory? Steady state says matter is continuously being created whereas the big bang says all matter was created at the beginning of time
What is a similarity between the big bang and steady state theory? The universe is expanding
What is redshift? When the wavelengths from distant galaxies shift towars the the red end of the spectrum in order to be longer than they should be - an increase in wavelength
Some galaxies show greater red shift than others. Explain what this suggests about the universe? It suggests the universe is expanding and some galaxies are moving faster than others.
Explain what data can be collected and processed using modern telescopes. Different wavelengths or frequencies are collected because telescopes are positioned above earth's atmosphere
State the stages of a star's lifecycle that is similar to our sun 1. Nebula 2. Protostar 3. Main sequence star 4.Red giant 5. White dwarf + shell of gas
State the stages of a large mass star's lifecycle 1. Nebula 2. Protostar 3. Main sequence star 4. Super red giant 6. Supernova 7. Either blackhole or neutron star
What is a Supernova? The explosion of a massive star
What are the forces like in a main sequence star? The forces of attraction pulling the particles inwards are balanced by thermal expansion forces due to nuclear fusion reactions and the high temperature
What provides further evidence for the big bang theory apart from red shift? Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation(CMBR) - microwave radiation that fills all space in the observable universe
What is nuclear fusion? A reaction in which two or more atomic nuclei combine to form a larger nucleus.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
