Origin, Insertion, and Function

Trapezius Origin: Occipital bone, spinous processes of thoracic vertebrae Insertion: Clavicle, acromion, and scapular spine Function: Elevates, retracts, rotates scapula.
Latissimus Dorsi Origin: Spinous processes of lower thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, iliac crest. Insertion: Intertubercular groove of humerus. Function: Extends, adducts, and medially rotates arm
Pectoralis Major Origin: Spinous processes of lower thoracis and lumbar vertebrae, iliac crest Insertion: Intertublar groove of humerus Function: Extends, adducts, and medially rotates arm.
Pectoralis Minor Origin: Ribs 3-5 Insertion: Coracoid process of scapula Function: Pulls scapula forward and downward.
Serratus Anterior Origin: Ribs 1-8 Insertion: Superior border or rib below Function: Protracts scapula ("boxer's muscle").
External Intercostals Origin: Inferior border of each rib. Insertion: Superior border of rib below Function: Elevates ribs during inhalation
Internal Intercostals Origin: Superior border of each rib Insertion: Inferior border of rib above Function: Depresses ribs during exhalation
Diaphragm Origin: Xiphoid process, ribs, lumbar vertebrae Insertion: Central tendon Function: Prime mover of inspiration
External Oblique Origin: Lower 8 ribs Insertion: Iliac crest & linea alba Function: Compresses abdomen, rotates trunk
Internal Oblique Origin: Iliac crest, lumbar fascia Insertion: Linea alba, lower ribs Function: Compresses abdomen, rotates trunk (opposite direction of external)
Transverse Abdominis Origin: Iliac crest, lumbar fascia, ribs Insertion: Linea alba and pubic crest Function: Compresses abdominal contents
