| Narrator | the person who tells the story |
| Dialogue | a conversation between two or more people |
| Subjective Point of View (POV) | statements that reflect opinion/preference. Can be argued against |
| Objective POV | statements that reflect only what is seen, heard, and observed; can NOT be argued against |
| First person POV | one of the story’s characters narrates using pronouns I, me, and my |
| Second person POV | the reader becomes a part of the story and the pronoun you is used |
| Third person limited POV | an outside narrator tells the story and can only see through the eyes of one character |
| Third person omniscient POV | an outsider narrator tells the story and has access to the thoughts and feelings of multiple characters |
| Multi-perspective | characters alternate between chapters (can be used in first or third person) |
| Genre | category of literature |
| Fiction | writing based on imaginary characters and plot |
| Historical fiction | story takes place in the past, focused on important historically relevant events, includes realistic characters |
| Science fiction | set in the future when major social or environmental changes have occurred; often includes advanced technology, or space travel |
| Fantasy | includes supernatural elements such as magic, vampires, immortality, or time travel; set in an imaginary world |
| Realistic fiction | characters, events, and settings could easily exist, characters face everyday problems, set in present times |
| Nonfiction | writing based on facts |
| Biography | story of a person's life written by another person |
| Autobiography | An account of a person's life written by that person |
| Memoir | an account of the author's personal experiences |
| Personal Narrative | a piece of writing that describes an incident and includes a personal response to and reflection on the incident |
