Plate Tectonics Quiz

QuestionAnswer
The Earth's plates are parts of the ____ broken into smaller pieces. lithosphere
3 theories of Plate Tectonics 1. Theory of Continental Drift 2. Seafloor Spreading 3. Current Theory-Plate Tectonics
What is the theory of Continental Drift? Continents have slowly moved over the Earth's surface.
What is Pangea? a Supercontinent where continents were once connected
Why was the Continental Drift Theory rejected? Alfred Wegener could not determine the force that pushes or pulls the continents in the 1900s.
What is the theory of Seafloor Spreading? 1960's theory. Oceans grew from their centers with molten material oozing up from the mantle along the mid ocean ridges which created a new seafloor.
What was the evidence of the seafloor spreading? Youngest rock at the ridge. Oldest rock near the continents. Reversed magnetic pattern.
What is the current theory of plate tectonics? Pieces of the Earth's lithosphere are in constant, slow motion, driven by convection currents in the mantle (athenosphere).
What is the evident of the current plate tectonics theory? Earthquakes volcanoes mountains rift valley Mid-ocean ridges (Ocean Basin Formation)
What is the Law of Superposition? The youngest layer is on the top and the oldest layer is on the bottom.
What are the three types of plate tectonic boundaries? Convergent, divergent, and transform
Which boundary has plates that move towards one another? Convergent
Which boundary has plates that move away from each other? Divergent
Which boundary has plates that move pass each other? transform
What types of landforms are found at the convergent boundary? mountains, volanic areas, rign of fire, subduction zone, trench
What types of landforms are found at the divergent boundary? rift valley, ocean basin formation (sea floor spreading), and mid-ocean ridge
What types of landforms are found at the transform boundary? earthquakes and fault lines
What is subduction? The process by which oceanic crusts sinks through a deep-ocean trench and back into the mantle; a convergent plate boundary

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
