What psychiatric disorders are sleep problems associated with? Sleep pattern disturbances occur in virtually every psychiatric disorder
Sedative Hypnotic Medications do what to your alertness? When should they be taken? They reduce alertness. Should be taken at bedtime.
Where are neurotransmitters released from? Where do they cross? What do they attach to? Neurotransmitters are released from the axon terminal of presynaptic neuron, crosses synapse, attaches to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron's surface.
How are neurotransmitters destroyed? Enzymatic destruction at postsynaptic cell or reuptake, taken back into the postsynaptic cell from whence they came.
Dopamine controls what? Motor movements, emotions, thoughts, decision making
Decreased dopamine sx Parkinson's disease, depression.
Increased dopamine sx Schizophrenia, mania
Norepinephrine function mood, attention, arousal
Increased norepinephrine sx Schizophrenia, mania, anxiety
Decreased norephinephrine sx Depression
Serotonin function Sleep, hunger, mood
Decreased Serotonin sx Depression
Histamine function Alertness, inflammation
Acetylcholine function Learning, memory
Decreased acetylcholine function Alzheimers
Glutamate function Excitatory, learning, memory
Decreased GABA causes anxiety, schizophrenia, mania
CT and MRI give you what type of details? Gross anatomical details
Positron emission Tomography (PET) Shows activity of the brain. Radioactive substance is injected.
