Stress A situation or occurrence that causes physical, mental, or emotional strain
Acute stressor Short duration
Chronic stressor Long duration; society is weighing you down
Causes of stress: Frustration, conflict, change
Frustration Anytime we try to pursue a goal, we cannot achieve the goal
Conflict Internal conflict that comes from competing motivations ex. angel and devil on the shoulder
Change Adjustments in your life
Eustress Positive stress in your life
Pressure Where other people are expecting a behavior from you
Maladaptive Responses to Stress Aggression, Addiction, Learned helplessness
Learned helplessness When you try to multiple times to solve the problem and then eventually give up even when opportunities are presented to you
Type A personality Hostility component in their personality
Immune function More likely to get sick
Cognitive reappraisal Changing how you think about a situation
Cross-situational Across situations
Cross-temporal Across time
Repression Keeping blocked out memories, thoughts, or feelings in the subconscious mind
Rationalization Using logic or reasoning to justify something upsetting
Denial The refusal to accept reality
Regression Reverting back to an earlier phase of psychological development; ex. childlike state
Projection Placing own unacceptable emotions, feelings, characteristics, or thoughts on another person so they can express unwanted feelings without responsibility
Displacement Redirecting feelings feelings on someone with less of an authority or less-threatening
Reaction formation (opposite of projection) Acting the opposite of what one really feels or thinks to hide true feelings about that person. Ex. two-faced
Sublimation Taking unacceptable impulses (aggression sexual urges) and turning it into something creative Ex. Channeling anger into intense workouts or building projects.
