John Winthrop Puritan leader; came to Massachusetts Bay Colony; wanted to be able to practice his religion freely, but didn't want others to be able to practice other religions
William Penn Founded Pennsylvania Colony; he was a Quaker (Christian religion); wanted a strong, fair government that tolerated other religion; treated Native Americans as trade partners
Roger Williams Founded Rhode Island; believed in buying land from the Native Americans
Elizabeth Key Grinstead Her bravery and fight for justice made her one of the first African American women in the colonies to successfully win freedom through the courts
Benjamin Lay A religious Christian; argued that God sees all human beings as equal, so how can people treat each other as unequal? Enslavement is wrong
Jenny Slew Her mother was a free White woman and her father was a Black man in Ipswich; Jenny was kidnapped and forced into enslavement after three years of being enslaved, Jenny sued and she won!
