Soil
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| 5 factors of soil formation | Climate, Time, Parent Material, Topogrpahy, Living Organisms |
| O horizon | Consists of organic material |
| A horizon | Known as topsoil, contains minerals and leeching happens here |
| B horizon | Known as subsoil, lighter colour, when minerals leech they gather here in an iron pan |
| C horizon | Contains parent material, therefore it’s rocky |
| R horizon | Bedrocks solid |
| Ombrotrophic peat | PH less than four, low levels of nutrients |
| Peat soils | Acidic PH, Used mainly in forestry, poor drainage |
| Gley soils | Poor structure, found in Cavan, usually waterlogged, formed by glaesation |
| Podzols | Acidic due to limestone, found in mountains areas, Wicklow, prone to leeching |
| Limestone PH | Basic PH greater than 7 |
| Sandstone PH | PH less than 7 |
| Climate | Water contributes to chiemical and physical weathering which can increase or decrease a soils ph |
| Living organisms | Contribute to hummus when they die, natural drainage systems because of earthworms |
| Podzol formation | Bleached A horizon due to podzolization, iron pan impermeable to water, B horizon minerals accumulate here |
| Brown podzolic soil | A1 large quantity of organic matter present, A2 Little development in thin horizon, B2 Red brown colour due to leeching and accumulation of minerals |
| Podzolation |
