Genetics Unit Vocabulary

TermDefinition
heredity the passing of traits from parents to offspring
genetics the scientific study of heredity
gene a segment of DNA on a chromosome that codes for a specific trait
allele different versions of a gene
dominant trait describes a trait that covers over, or dominates, another form of that trait
recessive trait a trait that is expressed only when two recessive alleles for the same characteristic are inherited
genotype genetic makeup of an organism
phenotype observable traits and physical appearance
homozygous an organism that has two identical alleles for a trait
heterozygous an organism that has two different alleles for a trait
traits characteristics that are inherited
F1 generation the first generation of offspring obtained from a cross of two orgaisms
pedigree a diagram that shows the occurrence of a genetic trait in several generations of a family
