Leg uit wat bedoeld wordt met de metafoor “Criminologie als een huis met vele kamers”. verwijst naar het feit dat criminologie geen eenduidige discipline is, maar verschillende benaderingen en methodes omvat. Ze is intrinsiek multi- en interdisciplinair, zonder een duidelijk afgebakend materieel (onderwerp) of formeel (methode) voorwerp.
Volgens David Garland (2002) heeft de criminologie twee hoofdkenmerken. Welke zijn dat? Een empirisch gegronde, wetenschappelijke aanpak en focus op door de staat gedefinieerde criminaliteit
Wat bedoelt Garland met het “Lombrosiaanse project” en het “gouvernementele project”? Lombrosiaans project: fundamenteel onderzoek naar de oorzaken van crimineel gedrag Gouvernementele project: beleidsgericht onderzoek dat overheden helpt om criminaliteit te beheersen en te voorkomen.

Materieel voorwerp: het onderwerp dat bestudeerd wordt (criminaliteit, daders, onveiligheid,en maatschappelijke reacties). Formeel voorwerp: de wijze waarop criminologie deze onderwerpen bestudeert — de methoden, theorieën en perspectieven
