Unit 1 - Vocabulary

Growth of the Colonies

TermDefinition
indigenous Produced, growing, or living natively or naturally in a particular region or environment
primary source Evidence of any kind that comes from the time being studied. Can be a first hand account, painting, artifact, historic building and more.
settlement A place where people have established a community.
colony A country or area under the full or partial political control of another country, typically one that is far away, and occupied by settlers from that country.
indentured servant A person who is required to work without pay for someone else for a specified length of time, often in exchange for the cost of travel, food, and lodging.
merchant A person who buys and sells goods, especially on a large scale or with foreign countries.
secondary source A description of history written later, which relies on primary sources for evidence. Articles, text boxes, and documentary films are examples.
liberation People who are enslaved, imprisoned, or treated unjustly seeking and/or gaining their freedom.
uprising An organized act of resistance where a group of people rebel against something they believe to be wrong.
inquiry The process of asking questions and examining materials to form answers.
