Bureaucracy A system of government with many departments and bureaus led by appointed official
Merit System A system in which people are hired and promoted based on talent and skills, rather than wealth or social skills
Khan The title of a ruler of a Mongal clan
Tribute A payment or gifts to a more powerful country
Kami A holy being that represents a spirit of nature, sacred place, ancestor, or clan in Japanese culture
Regent Someone who governs a country in the name of a ruler who is unable to rule. often because of age
Shogun Supreme military commander
Daimyo Local-land owning lords
Samurai Highly trained warriors
Bushido The strict code of conduct that guided samurai behavior
Shinto The traditional religion of Japan
Mantra A sacred word, chant, or sound that is repeated over and over to advance ones spiritual growth
