| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Qualitative | Visible descriptions; observations |
| Quantitative | Numerical details |
| Weathering | Natural process of breaking down resources |
| Homogenous | All parts are uniform; the same |
| Heterogenous | Made up of different parts; different throughout |
| Inorganic | Not alive |
| Erosion | Natural forces transporting sediment from one place to another |
| Arid | Dry, a dry area |
| Elevation | Height above a given level, typically sea level |
| Abundant | A lot |
| Sedimentary rocks | Rocks made up of broken down sediments that have combined into layers over time |
| Relative Dating | Method of dating using comparison between layers or fossils - does not provide specific age |
| Law of cross-cutting relationships | Any geological feature that cuts across another is younger than the feature it interrupts |
| Uplift | The process where the earth's crust is raised, increasing land elevation, typically due to tectonic plate movement |
| Down cutting | Geological process where a river deepens by eroding the material on it's bed |
| Law of Superposition | The layers in rock are oldest at the bottom, and are younger the closer they are to the Earth's surface |
| Law of original horizontality | Rocks are deposited in horizontal layers due to gravity |
| Sequence | Process of arranging rock layers in chronological order to understand Earth's history |
| Unconformity | A gap in the rock or sequence that occurs from erosion taking away a layer or layers. |
| Tributary | A small river or stream flowing into a bigger body of water |
| Watershed | An area of land that separates water, causing it to flow into different bodies of water. |
| Diversion | The process of unnaturally redirecting water from it's natural coarse to be used for other purposes |
| Bioaccumulation | The gradual buildup of substances, such as toxic chemicals, in an organism over it's lifetime |
| Porosity | The percent of empty space between rocks or sediments |
| Permeability | The speed at which water passes through sediment |
| Infiltration | Process of surface water seeping into the soil to become groundwater |
| Retention | Stored or held onto |
| Spatial | Relating to space; where |
| Temporal | Relating to time; when |
| Physical weathering | Rocks are broken into smaller pieces without changing what they're made of; without chemical change |
| Chemical weathering | The minerals in the rock change into a new substance; they change chemically |
